MS App-V 4.6 All Languages Hotfix Package 2 released

Microsoft Application VirtualizationMicrosoft released Hotfix Package 2 for Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.6 All Languages. This hotfix is for the All Languages version: build 4.6.0.20200. Yes, there are two App-V 4.6 client versions; the “English Only” and the “All Languages”. Both with a separate hotfix path. Where the English Only version is already at hotfix package 5, the All Languages version is now at hotfix package 2. But the issues addressed in both versions should now be the same, so hotfix package 5 Englisch Only = hotfix package 2 All Languages.

First impression: InstallFree Bridge

My main experience with Application Virtualization is based on App-V (formerly known as Softgrid) and a bit of VMware ThinApp and Citrix Streaming Applications. With the release of InstallFree Bridge 2.0 it’s time to spend some time on this product too. So, how to get a quick hands-on experience? Well, I just signed up for an online hands-on lab. After contact with an InstallFree representative I’ve had access to a 7-day lab environment including some exercises. Which was a great way to get some hands-on experience with the product. Thank you, InstallFree.

My first impressions on InstallFree Bridge are based on this hands-on lab. Next to that I’ve also read some available documents. Because I’ve not installed the product I will not have an impression on the installation phase.

Monthly highlights – March 2010

Every month I will try to wrap up some highlights about virtualization news, personal experience or other IT related items which had my attention, this time March 2010:

Ongoing discussions about VDI; Desktop Virtualization is hot, 2010 will be the year of desktop virtualization. Last month a lot discussion about the display protocols, ICA (HDX) vs PC-over-IP. The discussions are a nice read. There will be use cases for both products. User Experience will be an important part in terms of user adoption. That’s why the display protocols are important.
Citrix developed HDX for ICA and are a step ahead of VMware, just because VMware doesn’t own PC-over-IP. What if Teradici will be acquired by another company? As a VMware View customer, should you switch back to RDP?

Microsoft APP-V and Citrix XenDesktop – Better Together?

When you think about Desktop Virtualization you will also think about Application Virtualization. This blog post will analyze whether if Microsoft App-V is a good partner for Citrix XenDesktop.
App-V and XenDesktop - better together?
Why this product combination? Well, I think, at the moment these products are both top products in their category. What if we combine these products, keeping in mind the latest release of App-V (4.6) and the upcoming release for XenApp (6)? Will this combination contribute to a better solution?

First I will give a short overview of each product and after that I will describe the combination of both products.

App-V is now more ready to step into desktop virtualization

Microsoft released App-V 4.6 earlier this week. With this release Microsoft Application Virtualization will be brought to the next level: support for 64-bit applications. This release will contribute to a broader adoption of application virtualization in combination with desktop virtualization. Think about Windows Server 2008 R2 RDS which is 64-bit only or VDI scenario’s where storage usage is an issue.

With App-V 4.6 it is now possible to design well scalable desktop virtualization solutions based on Microsoft Virtualization products (and of course products of other vendors).

While you may think it’s a minor release from 4.5 SP1 to 4.6, the new features are great:

Best practices for setting up your APP-V sequence machine

When virtualizing applications with Microsoft Application Virtualization (APP-V), one of the steps is application sequencing. With application sequencing the application will be installed in its virtual environment and prepared for streaming delivery. For application sequencing the APP-V sequencer will be used.

Designing and building an APP-V infrastructure is normally just a small piece of your whole application virtualization project. Most of the time will be spent on the sequencing part. To be successful in this step it is important to have your APP-V sequencer configured properly.

The following steps describe how to setup your APP-V sequence machine:

Also as part of the Desktop Virtualization hype, Application Virtualization will contribute significantly.
